There are cases when a business does not want or cannot accept payments made via regular payment gateways, for example, if they want to save on card processing fees or accept crypto. In some situations, it is simply more convenient for a buyer to pay via a wire transfer or a mobile money service, like mPesa in Kenya.
Checkify helps its customers to accept such kind of payments and has all the tools for setting up a custom buying experience aimed at easy and successful completion of orders. So, in fact, anyone can create a custom non-automated payment method for their checkouts.
NOTE: Only the middle- and top-tier subscription plans enable manual payment options, also known as "Cash on Delivery".
Below is one of the possible ways to optimize your custom checkout page for accepting manual payment methods:
1. Visit admin > Customization > General-settings.
Find 'Page settings' and enable 'Display a message field from buyers on the checkout page'.
Example: A buyer pasted a crypto transaction confirmation to the message field on the checkout
2. Visit admin > Localization.
Find ‘Order summary’ section. Modify the appropriate fields.
Example: The default "Add message for seller" changed to "Hash transaction". A placeholder that helps buyers understand what is expected from them is added
Scroll down to 'Cash on delivery' section and rename accordingly.
For example, if you intend to collect payments in crypto currency, the name of the method should be indicated.
Example: The default "Cash on delivery" changed to "Crypto wallet". The instruction (description) for the method was modified too
3. Once the order is successfully placed (imported), you will see the relevant details in Notes, which would help you identify and match customers and transactions.
Example: The buyer added the URL to a blockchain explorer. It would be possible to check the link and study this transaction in detail
If the funds / transactions are visible and confirmed on your account, wallet, etc., simply mark the order as ‘Paid’ on Shopify and proceed to fulfillment.
The algorithm above is not the only way to collect manual payments confirmation from your customers.
As an alternative, you may visit admin > Address forms. Create a form with custom fields, name them accordingly and start collecting data necessary for order processing and fulfillment!
Resolving common issues
🙀 Can I use upsells with cash on delivery (manual payment methods)?
Yes, but be careful. We do not recommend an Upsell for this method due to the following case:
At the checkout your buyer sees the total of Х. They pay this amount somewhere and have the confirmation for it. Once this buyer completes the purchase, they will see an upsell offer, valued Y. The buyer accepts the offer and sees the total value of X + Y on the order confirmation (Thank You) page. However, they have initially paid for X. Therefore, they should either make another transaction, which is an extra action. Additionally, it is not convenient for a merchant, who will have to match not just the order and the transaction, but attribute one more value to the order. It may cause mix up and extra communication between the sides. Therefore, we recommend keeping the upsells off for such a method.
🙀 How can I boost my average order value with manual payment methods?
You may use extra offers. Thank You page pre-sells and / or checkout page (pre-upsells) will not cause any confusion.
