How to connect Mollie

Follow this guide to enable Mollie as a payment gateway on your store, along with such popular alternative payment methods as iDEAL, Klarna, Bancontact, Trustly, P24, TWINT, and many more.

Updated this week

Mollie is a European payments platform and payment service provider (PSP) that helps merchants accept online and in-person payments more easily. Mollie’s platform is designed to let merchants pick and enable the payment methods relevant to their customers and markets via a unified interface and with transparent pricing.

For Checkify.pro customers, it opens access to a wide range of trusted local and international payment options, such as iDEAL, Bancontact, SEPA Bank Transfer & SEPA Direct Debit, Klarna, Apple Pay and Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards.

This makes it easier for stores targeting European buyers to offer familiar, regionally preferred methods and improve checkout conversion rates.

For more info about this payment processor please visit mollie.com.

2.2 Additional options

When adding Mollie as a payment method on Checkify.pro, you will also able to configure additional options:

i. Target countries.

You can select specific countries or regions for which this payment method will be displayed.

ii. Manage blocks with Mollie's payment options visibility on the checkout page.

It is possible to choose the desired layout of Mollie’s payment block on your checkout page. There are three available options: both cards and other (alternative) methods, cards, or other methods.

For example, deactivating “other methods” may be useful for creating a more streamlined checkout experience, especially if a business accepts card payments exclusively.

Example: (L) Default layout. (R) Layout with the “Hide ‘cards’ block” option selected.

3. Alternative payment methods by Mollie

Mollie provides access to over 40 local and global payment methods, but the selection available to your customers is determined solely by the payment service provider.

Mollie determines the eligibility of your business to accept certain methods. Checkify.pro will automatically work with the full set of payment options that you have successfully enabled and that are available in your Mollie account.

Businesses and their buyers are benefitting from the following set of methods:

Bank-based methods
Bank-based methods allow customers to pay online directly using their bank accounts through a secure and user-friendly checkout process. These methods are popular among consumers and can enhance conversion rates while reducing fraud. Examples: iDEAL (Netherlands), Bancontact (Belgium), and Przelewy24 (Poland).

Direct debit

Direct debits let businesses automatically withdraw recurring payments from customers' bank accounts, ensuring timely payments and reducing admin tasks, ideal for subscriptions and recurring services.

Examples: SEPA Direct Debit (Europe-wide), BACS (UK).

Buy now, pay later (BNPL)

BNPL options enable retailers to attract customers who prefer to pay in installments. Your business receives full payment immediately, while customers can choose to pay nothing or only a portion of the total cost at checkout.

Examples: Klarna (EEA, UK, Switzerland), iDEAL_in3 (Netherlands)

Wallets

Wallets offer a quick and secure payment method using saved cards or stored balances. They enhance conversion rates and minimize fraud, particularly on mobile devices.

Examples: Apple Pay, Google Pay.

Merchants only pay for successful transactions.

For a comprehensive list of supported methods, refer to the Mollie Payment Methods documentation here.

3.1 Activating and deactivating methods

You enable or disable payment methods through a simple toggle in your Mollie account:

  1. Log in to your Mollie Dashboard (the Mollie Web app).

  2. Click on your Organization Name in the top-left corner, and go to Organization settings.

  3. Navigate to Payments (under the Products section) or Payment methods.

  4. You can toggle (click the plus sign ⊕) a payment method to activate or deactivate it.

NOTE: Methods like Klarna, SEPA Direct Debit, and Credit Cards require additional verification and approval from Mollie's compliance team before they become fully active.

3.2. Customizing the display order and logic

Mollie helps optimize the checkout experience on their hosted pages:

  • Display order: Mollie uses A/B testing to automatically optimize the order based on the customer's location (e.g., placing iDEAL first for Dutch buyers).

  • Branding: You can customize the logo and pay button color of the hosted Mollie checkout page directly in the Mollie Dashboard > Settings > Personalize Checkout to maintain brand consistency.

  • Legal terms: You may add an external URL as terms and conditions to Mollie-hosted checkout page, in addition to what you may have on your Checkify checkout's footer links.

4. Supported currencies and languages

5. Resolving common issues

🙀 How do I link an imported order with a Mollie payment received?

When the order is placed successfully, there is always a set of data associated with it. It is provided in the Orders section of the Checkify admin.

Alternatively, you may find this info on Shopify. Open the order timeline. Here, Authorization key = Mollie Payment ID. Example:

The Payments section in my.mollie.com also contains the same transaction identifier. Example:

Every payment on Mollie also contains some other information useful for working with orders:

  • addresses (shipping and billing, as entered on the checkout page),

  • line items (products, extra offers, shipping cost, discounts, taxes)

You may disable product name transfer to the payment processor in admin > Payment methods > Settings

  • payment method information

  • refunds and chargebacks data

  • metadata (your Checkify checkout unique ID and link to a thank you (order confirmation) page)

🙀 I see an order pending status on my Shopify. What happens with the order?

There is always a gap between accepting an order and capturing the payment (marking it as 'Paid'). This is normal, because during this time the payment is authorized but not yet charged. If the order is canceled before capture, the authorization is simply released, usually without fees, since the funds were never fully processed by the bank. The speed is different depending on the payment method used: it could be faster for cards, it may require a bit more time for some other methods, like transfers.

So, it is advisable to wait for the payment to be captured. No immediate action is required on your side.

🙀 How do I refund the payment for an order received via Mollie?

For more accurate accounting and reporting, we recommend using the native Shopify refund flow for orders. This process is fully automated: Shopify and Mollie communicate directly, and Checkify is not involved. Your changes made on Shopify will be reflected on my.mollie.

Example: A refund of EUR5.19 for order 1379 is initiated on Shopify and is recorded in Mollie

🙀 How can I indicate that non-card payments are also available?

Since it is possible to modify nearly every word on the checkout page, you can adjust it depending on your business needs and target geo. The default selectors are "Cards" and "Other methods". It can be edited, if required.

Visit admin > Localization section, Mollie. For example, if iDEAL is your focus, you may edit the text in the in the “Switcher - Other methods” field and explicitly indicate it. The description of the payment method has also been changed. See the example of such an update below:

Buyers will clearly see the name of the method and know what to expect.

🙀 Which payment processors, apart from Mollie, are available?

Checkify.pro customers can collect payments via Airwallex, Stripe, PayPal or Adyen. Here, we explain more about the differences and which one to choose. It is a common practice to have more than one payment gateway active. For example , Stripe + PayPal or Airwallex + PayPal, and a manual payment method (cash on delivery) in addition to that.
